A bill filed in the House of Representatives seeks the establishment of a College of Medicine at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Quezon City to help address the critical shortage of doctors in the country.

House Bill 9605, sponsored by Quezon City (Second District) Rep. Ralph Wendel Tulfo, ACT-CIS party-list Reps. Erwin Tulfo and Jocelyn Tulfo invoked TUP’s commitment to offer scholarships and affirmative action programs for financially challenged yet deserving students.

The proposed PUP-College of Medicine, aims to provide cutting-edge medical training, research opportunities, and community engagement initiatives to produce a diverse and skilled medical workforce, the proponents said.

“This bill seeks to lay the foundation for a comprehensive medical education program that encompasses cutting-edge medical training, research opportunities, and community engagement initiatives,” the bill’s explanatory note read.

“The establishment of a College of Medicine at the PUP-QC branch will serve as a transformative step towards producing a skilled and diverse workforce of medical practitioners who are not only academically competent but also deeply committed to serving the health needs of our communities,” the authors added.
