SM Mall of Asia and SM Megamall hosted the 26th edition of the French Film Festival from Nov. 25 to Dec. 3, presenting a varied selection of 21 feature films.

This year’s festival, organized by the French Embassy in the Philippines in partnership with SM Supermalls and SM Cinema, celebrated not just the art of filmmaking but also the enduring cultural ties between France and the Philippines.

Led by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the French Republic to the Philippines H.E. Marie Fontanel, the festival emphasized the significance of introducing Filipino youth to various cultures through film. It also aimed to act as a cultural connector, promoting the understanding and admiration of French culture among Filipinos.

As for SM Supermalls President Steven Tan, the festival demonstrated SM’s commitment to delivering world-class cinema experiences and immersive entertainment.

The carefully curated selection of films reflected the dynamism and breadth of French cinema, with new releases, box office hits, and even a sprinkling of classics featuring legendary actors like Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Paul Belmondo.

The opening was attended by movie enthusiasts, VIPs from the Filipino film industry, and friends of the embassy, and was honored by the presence of acclaimed French actress and film director Emmanuelle Béart, who flew in from France for the occasion.

Béart is a contemporary symbol of French cinema, who gained fame for her leading roles in Manon des Sources (1986), La Belle Noiseuse (1991), and Nelly and Mr. Arnaud (1995), following her early appearances in Premiers Désirs (1983) and Jean de Florette (1986). Her other works, such as Mission Impossible (1996), Les Destinées (2000), 8 Women (2001), and Replay (2001), have received global recognition.

Additionally, she recently directed a documentary titled Such a Resounding Silence, which is being screened on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC).

Beyond the big screen, the festival brimmed with enriching experiences. Filmmakers and actors engaged in lively Q&A sessions, providing fascinating insights into their creative processes.
