RISING weightlifting star Rose Jean Ramos from Zamboanga City towed the Philippines’ kickoff bid in the Weightlifting Federation Grand Prix II with a remarkable performance, securing three silver medals in the women’s 45kg category on Tuesday (Wednesday PH time) in Doha, Qatar.

The 18-year-old Zamboanga City pride showcased her prowess with a total lift of 155kgs, comprising a 70kg snatch and an 85kg clean and jerk. Despite facing stiff competition, Ramos’s stellar performance earned her a well-deserved recognition on the podium.

The gold medals in the women’s 45kg category were claimed by North Korea’s Won Hyon, who demonstrated exceptional strength with a total lift of 181kgs (82-99).

Ramos expressed her gratitude to his coaches and teammates for their support.

“I thank the Lord because he never left me in the game, and I also thank the coaches, coach Armas De Fuego because he gives me strength to fight and I am also thankful to coach Diwa Delos Santos and coach Christopher Bureros,” said Ramos, who also thanked her institutional supporters, including the Philippine Sports Commission and the City of Zamboanga.

Monico Puentevella, head of the Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas, expressed satisfaction with the results, emphasizing the importance of representing the country in the international stage.

“When our kids go out to represent the country in the international field, we always look forward to gaining medals or they don’t go. It’s as simple as that,” said Puentevella.

Ramos, who became part of the national training pool in 2018, has an impressive track record, having won the World Youth Weightlifting Championships twice.

Her dedication and talent were evident in her previous victories, including gold medals in clean and jerk and total in Mexico last year and a triumphant performance in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 2021.

Currently studying at Mampang National High School, Ramos has been under the guidance of national coach Allen Jayfrus Diaz for the past seven years.
