For the benefit of employees using American Intelligence (AI) in their industry, Senator Mark Villar said it is about time for the country to have its own rules regulating use and development of AI.

He commended President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for initiating partnerships on AI with Silicon Valley companies. The senator is upbeat on the success of the partnership.

However, Villar emphasized that an up-to-date framework for AI is significant to level the playing field for Filipinos especially now that the country’s digital infrastructure remains underdeveloped and unsupervised.

Toward this end, Villar filed Senate Resolution No. 588 seeking a legislative inquiry the use of AI in different sectors and industries.

The measure also cited the need to establish a framework pertinent to the adoption, promotion, development, and fair use of AI in the Philippines.

“As the Philippines embraces the use of AI in various day-to-day activities, a substantial part of this technology still remains unchartered,” Villar noted.

He admitted that the government still has no idea how to properly approach AI in terms of the regulation. “With this resolution, we are hoping that the Senate inquiry will bring light to information about AI that we can use to build a legal framework,” Villar said.

He also hinted at the possibility of looking into the impact of AI on the daily lives of Filipinos as he recognizes both the risks and opportunities brought by the AI technology.
