The Samahang Kickboxing ng Pilipinas introduced its newest event that will serve as the flagship project of its grassroots program during the ongoing 2023 National Kickboxing Championship at the Tagaytay Combat Sports Center in Tagaytay City.

Aiming to discover more talents and stir kickboxing among young enthusiasts, especially students, pointfighting will become a regular event in all of SKP’s national and regional tournaments.

It will also be the centerpiece event of the Batang Pinoy, the Philippine Sports Commission’s grassroots program dedicated to children and youth athletes.

“It has been a bullet train journey for Pilipinas kickboxing and now we present one of the most interesting events in the sport. Pointfighting (is) purely speed and technique that parents (would) approve. A sport for your young ones and good for the seniors as well,” said Roselyn Hung, national team coach and tournament director of the national tournament.

Pointfighting is a light contact kickboxing category that puts emphasis on techniques, making it less dangerous than other kickboxing categories like lowkick and full contact, where knocking out opponents is part of the objective to win a match.

In pointfighting, actions are halted every clear punch or kick and awarded points right away.

“It’s a very safe sport especially for children. We are hoping that more parents will allow their kids to participate as we work with the PSC in the holding of Batang Pinoy and Philippine National Games,” added Hung.

Several youth athletes from Cebu, Benguet, Laguna and Manila are entered in some pointfighting events’ elimination round on Thursday.
