All nine detainees who escaped from a Manila detention facility on Wednesday, Nov. 8, have been apprehended and placed behind bars.

In an update, the Manila Police District (MDP) said the last remaining jailbreaker at large, Jefferson Bunso Tumbaga, was captured in Bacoor City, Cavite at 2:15 a.m.

The nine detainees who escaped are facing various charges that include illegal drugs, robbery, and illegal possession of firearms.

Police Colonel Arnold Thomas Ibay of the MPD earlier said that the
detainees were able to escape after apparently tearing down the steel bars
in the jail facility.

“Initial investigation revealed that the escapee managed to break the iron grill at the side portion of the jail facility,” police said.

The station commander, his deputy, the duty officer, and the policemen on duty at the time of the jailbreak have been relieved from their posts.

Authorities said a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine how police officers manning the station were unaware of the jailbreak considering that it happened next to the desk officer and the area is being monitored by CCTV camera.

Visitation rights for the remaining 100 detainees at the station’s jail facility were also suspended.

After the incident, authorities welded additional steel bars to prevent further escapes from happening.
