In celebration of his 35th anniversary in the business, singer and songwriter  Ogie Alcasid  is gearing up for a one-of-a-kind concert experience.

Dubbed  Ogieoke: The Concert, this unique musical spectacle is happening tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.

“My idea was really to make it fun. I wanted it to be lively. In fact, for the opening, I wrote a theme song called ‘Ogieoke.’ I incorporated spiels in the song so that when you watch the concert, you will understand why we did it. It’s really a night where we celebrate our culture because karaoke is really our thing,” Ogie told  Manila Standard Entertainment  in an interview.

The concert will be executed in the style of a real videoke session, complete with “scoring” after finishing a song. What’s more, the audience will have the chance to join Ogie on stage and flaunt their singing skills.

“As for the whole show, there will be lyrics displayed throughout, making it feel like you’re attending a sing-along,” Ogie added.

The seasoned singer explained the reason behind this unique concert, stating, “Newport Resorts World is celebrating its 14th anniversary, and they approached me to put on a show. Coincidentally, my birthday was on August 27, and I didn’t get to celebrate it because I had to leave for  Kilabotitos. So, in a way, this concert serves as my belated birthday party.”

Sharing the stage with Ogie are the talented couple  Gian Magdangal  and  Lara Maigue, along with director  Paolo Bustamante, Ogie’s high school classmate.

“I have some surprise guests lined up. I won’t reveal their names. Let’s keep it a surprise,” he said alluding to questions about whether his wife Regine Velasquez would join him onstage.

Ogie aims to pay homage to the Filipino love for karaoke, which is the country’s second favorite pastime, right after gossip. “It’s not a groundbreaking concept, to be honest, but in a concert setting, it’s something fresh,” he said.

Ogie also revealed that a significant portion of the concert’s repertoire would consist of ‘80s songs, the tunes he grew up with, rather than his original compositions that made him famous.

One song that’s guaranteed to be on the list is the classic “My Way” by  Frank Sinatra. This song holds a special place in Ogie’s heart as it reminds him of his late father, Herminio Sr. He even shared a touching video of them singing it on his social media accounts.

“’My Way’ is my father’s favorite, and it’s becoming my anthem as well. No one else in the Philippines sings it. No other singer claims it,” Ogie shared.
