Baguio City is set to host its very first Historic Victory Day Bike Ride on September 3, a unique event aimed at honoring the bravery and sacrifices of Filipino and American soldiers during World War II, while also raising funds to preserve historical markers and landmarks throughout the city.

This historic event, organized by the Philippine Veterans Bank, in partnership with the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), City Government of Baguio, Wartime Heritage Guild Philippines (WHG), Without Limits, and Salgado PR invites cycling enthusiasts and history buffs alike to participate in a non-competitive bike ride to foster a deeper understanding of the city’s significant role during WWII while encouraging active participation in the sport of cyclists of all ages and backgrounds.

Mike Villa-Real, PVB first vice president for marketing and communications, said “the ride aims to shed light on Baguio City’s significant role during World War II and pay homage to the countless heroes who fought for the liberation of the Philippines. More importantly, we hope to make more Filipinos know that there is a Victory Day during World War II and that completes the story.”

Baguio City, often referred to as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines,” holds a rich and often untold history as a sanctuary for Filipino and American soldiers during World War II. The city is also significant in World War II history. It was among the first to be bombed when Japan invaded the Philippine Islands on Dec. 8, 1941 because of the presence of Camp John Hay; and it was also the site where the war ended.

The 1st Historic Victory Day Bike Ride is a non-competitive 35.5-kilometer cycling event that will cover a route that encompasses several historical landmarks. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the city’s war history through informative pit stops and presentations along the way. Find out how the country reclaimed our freedom when General Tomoyuki Yamashita, commander of the Japanese Military Forces, was captured by Filipino guerillas in Hungduan, Ifugao, and on September 3, 1945, in Baguio, he signed the documents of his formal surrender, along with his troops from all over the country.

This event is not just about biking; it’s about preserving history and ensuring that future generations remember and appreciate the sacrifices made during World War II. All proceeds from the bike ride will go toward the restoration and maintenance of historical WWII markers and landmarks in Baguio City, ensuring that the stories of valor and courage are not lost to time.

Mr. Villa-Real added, “The Historic Victory Day Bike Ride is not only a celebration of our city’s history but also a way to give due recognition to the brave men and women who fought for our freedom. It’s an opportunity to connect with the past, honor our veterans, and ensure that the memories of their sacrifices live on for generations to come.”

This Historic Victory Day Bike Ride represents a heartfelt tribute to the heroes of World War II and a testament to the enduring spirit of unity and remembrance within the Baguio City community. We invite Baguio residents along the routes to watch out and cheer the riders.

The non-competitive bike ride will have 4 pitstops: from Baguio City Hall, Camp Allen, USAFIP-NL Marker, Sablan, Banangan View Deck, and Fort Del Pilar (Philippine Military Academy).

All slots for the Victory Day ride has been sold out. Registered participants will receive an official event shirt, a race bib and passport, a loot bag, post-ride meal, and commemorative medal. The event is supported by Glorious, Sweet & Fit Stevia, and Biopatch.

PVB is a private, commercial bank owned by World War 2 veterans and their families. With its new Charter signed into law, the Bank’s ownership now includes Post War Veterans and AFP Retirees.
