Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said the support of local government units allows the agency to continue creating more bike lanes nationwide.

“This year, there will be around 400 kilometers of bike lanes in the country,” Bautista said during the groundbreaking ceremony of the expansion of active transport infrastructure in the region.

“Next year we have asked for an additional budget to have additional bike lanes nationwide,” he said.

The DOTr and the Department of Public Works and Highways expect to complete 76.70 kilometers of bike lanes on selected roads in the Calabarzon region in the first quarter of 2024.

It said the construction of bike lanes in the region has a total approved budget of P151.7 million under the General Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2022.

The Active Transport Program by the DOTr is set to expand the country’s protected bike lane networks to 2,400 kilometers by 2028.

About 564 kilometers of bike lanes in Metro Cebu, Metro Manila and Metro Davao were already completed.

The DOTr allocated P500 million to construct more bike lanes and proper public transport stops this year.
