Mayon Volcano in Albay recorded a high incidence of 184 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours after four consecutive days of less than a hundred quakes.

In its previous bulletins, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the volcano recorded 90 quakes on July 20, 81 quakes on July 21, and 22 on Saturday.

Last Sunday, there were only five volcanic quakes at Mayon. Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said it is still not certain if Mayon would have moderate-sized explosions in the next few days.

“The quakes decreased from July 22 to 23 but increased again between Saturday and Sunday. It had 184 volcanic earthquakes from five volcanic quakes.

It is hard for us to say because when we add up the total seismic energy release, and it is still too low,” he said.

At least 156 rockfall events and four pyroclastic density current events were also registered in the volcano on Monday.

It continued to have a slow effusion of lava from the summit crater, reaching 2.8 kilometers along both Mi-isi and Bonga Gullies, and 600 meters along the Basud Gully.

Mayon Volcano’s sulfur dioxide emission averaged 2,047 tons on Saturday.
