Sen. Raffy Tulfo said the school facilities of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Sta. Mesa “are rotten” and vowed that the school’s budget will not be slashed by the Department of Budget Management (DBM).

Following an ocular inspection at the said school on June 29, Tulfo said he has confirmed the complaints of some PUP students that school facilities are old, damaged, and not conducive to learning.

While it’s likely that PUP has quality education, the senator pointed out its rotten facilities.

He expressed dismay at the dilapidated buildings and classrooms and said the said buildings in PUP need to be renovated and equipment needs to be upgraded.

The senator specifically cited the facilities at the PUP’s Department of Engineering laboratory, which he said, are difficult to operate while some already appear like junk.

He also likened the hallway and some classrooms to an oven. He cited the lack of ventilation or even electric fans.

“Their chairs are begging to be replaced, “ he added.

He also stressed that the elevators in various buildings, which should have been used by persons with disabilities (PWDs) students, are not functioning.

In the school’s basketball court, Tulfo said the ball might not even bounce because the floor already has a lot of flakes. To make matters worse, some electrical cables are dangling inside the gym which can cause accidents.

Tulfo likewise expressed frustrations over the lack of electricity of some of the buildings due to construction. He said there is another project of the DPWH that has been under construction for almost a year and only a portion of it has been finished. He also  mentioned the scattered heaps of discarded items in various places on campus that can infest mosquitoes and cause dengue.

University President Manuel M. Muhi and Vice President for Administration Adam V. Ramilo, told Tulfo their budget allotted by Congress yearly is being slashed by the DBM.
