Angkas founder Angeline Tham declared her dedication to making a profound difference in the transport and technology industries.

Tham passionately highlighted during the 18th annual general assembly of the Philippine Federation of Local Councils of Women how women could challenge the status quo and drive transformation by directing their efforts towards uplifting lives.

“Through the establishment of Angkas, we have not only introduced a new way to navigate our congested cities but have also sparked a movement towards social and economic empowerment. This is something that you can do today in your position in your organization or business. I ask you to look for ways to help uplift the lives of those around you, one person at a time,” Tham said.

One of the key aspects Tham underscored was the utilization of technology to create a meaningful impact. Drawing attention to the challenging commute faced by Filipinos, Tham and the Angkas team embarked on transforming and professionalizing the informal motorcycle taxi industry known as ‘habal-habal’ by offering safe, reliable and efficient transportation to Filipinos.

Moreover, the vision of Angkas extended beyond mere transportation. Tham said Angkas recognized the potential to empower marginalized individuals within the informal sector by providing them with essential training, support and tools to become professional motorcycle taxi drivers.

Through this approach, Angkas not only improved commuting experiences but also created opportunities for entrepreneurship, allowing individuals to uplift their families and break free from the cycle of poverty.

“We were successful not because we launched a ride hailing app which anyone can do; we became the no. 1 motorcycle taxi app by fostering trust and connection with our bikers. By offering financial literacy training, various income opportunities, and humane motorcycle loans. We created a supportive environment for them to grow and achieve stability. This approach highlights the unique value that women leaders bring to the table. My challenge to you is to dig deeper into problems and address the real needs of those we serve, making a lasting, positive change,” Tham said.

Senator Cynthia Villar highlighted the need to close the gender digital divide in the country saying the pressing issue has resulted in a shortage of skilled workers. “This means we are missing out on the potential contribution of more than half of our population in the development of a strong digital economy. Addressing this divide is urgent considering that by 2025, nearly 90 percent of jobs will require digital skills. As women, let us uplift and support one another, ensuring that no woman is left behind in this journey of digital transformation,” Villar said.

Given this, Tham urged women leaders to embrace technology as an empowering tool that propels businesses and communities. “Using technology, we created a system for our bikers where success becomes the rule, rather than the exception. And the only requirement is your skill and hard work. You shouldn’t have to be exceptional to earn a decent living or simply provide for your family. I love the Philippines and I am certain we can only grow stronger. Let’s create one million jobs, transform lives, and make our nation stronger,” Tham said.
