The Philippine Football Federation is inviting Filipino football fans to become part of history by joining the public view of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy on March 1 at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati.
“We invite all football fans and stakeholders to come and visit the trophy when it arrives here to see women’s football’s biggest prize,” said PFF president Mariano Araneta.
“We are delighted to welcome the FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy in Manila as the excitement continues to build up for the Filipinas’ debut in the most prestigious women’s football tournament in the world.”
The Philippines women’s squad made history when it qualified for the 2023 Women’s World Cup under coach Alen Stajcic. Subsequently, the Philippines was chosen to be part of the Trophy Tour of the Women’s World Cup 2023.
PFF secretary general Atty. Ed Gastanes said exciting activities have been lined up during the tour, where Filipino fans can join and show their support to the Filipinas, who are preparing for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 slated on July 20 to August 20 in various places across both Australia and New Zealand.
The Filipinas were drawn in Group A along with Norway, Switzerland, and host New Zealand.
The World Cup trophy will be in the country until March 2 with different related activities lined up including mini-games like freestyle football, penalty shootouts, and skills and header challenges while fans can also have an opportunity to have a photo with the actual World Cup trophy.
“We hope that the upcoming trophy tour would inspire Filipino football fans and players, particularly young women’s players nationwide,” added PFF general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes. “It is a unique moment for everyone to see the trophy which is only seen during the official draw and the final match of the Women’s World Cup.”
The original trophy is currently at the World Football Museum in Zurich, Switzerland. It was designed by William Sawaya from Milan, Italy for the 1999 tournament. All the names of the countries which have previously won the World Cup are engraved underneath the base.
An exact replica of the trophy is given to the World Cup winners with the name of the winning team engraved underneath.
