Gilas needs quickness, energy vs. Japan

A day’s rest will help the Philippines recover its energy after losing to the New Zealand Tall Blacks, 75-92, on Sunday night at the end of Group D hostilities of the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Indonesia.

Their next opponent on Tuesday is Japan, known to be an energetic squad that loves to run.

“They have to rest. They need energy and quickness to stay with Japan,” said Gilas coach Chot Reyes after the Philippines was relegated to the playoffs.

Hurdling Japan will give Gilas a chance to reach the quarterfinals and set up a clash with Australia.

Iran dropped Japan, 88-76, in their Group C match last Sunday, to barge into the quarterfinals.

Reyes told members of the team to forget their loss to the Tall Blacks and just focus on what’s ahead and their slim hopes of making the quarterfinals.
