Taguig City senior citizens appear to be luckier than their counterparts elsewhere in the country because they are receiving a windfall courtesy of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in collaboration with the local government unit.

Another batch from the more than 14,000 elderlies in Taguig received their P3,000 social pension from the local government last Thursday.

The cash doleout, spearheaded by the DSWD through the city’s Office for Senior Citizen Affairs, covers 14,818 indigent senior citizens from the 28 barangays of the city.

The distribution at Lakeshore Hall in Barangay Lower Bicutan will continue until June 10.

The beneficiaries needed only to prove that they were not receiving any pension from other government agencies such as the Social Security System, the Government Service Insurance System, and the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office.

Meanwhile, Ormoc local officials led by Mayor-elect Lucy Torres-Gomez visited Taguig last Wednesday and conducted a benchmarking of the city’s “Center for the Elderly”.

The benchmarking aims to establish a system of measures for internal management and strategic goals; and to use these measures to identify best practices; and for possible duplication of said project or facility in Ormoc City.

The Taguig City Center for the Elderly is a five-story building with a clinic, a conference room, a ballroom/gym, a dialysis center, a recreational center, and a movie theater. It was established to ensure the health and wellbeing of the city’s senior citizens.

Taguig has numerous programs for the elderly to include medical assistance, financial assistance/cash gifts, and worthwhile recreational activities, among others.

Mayor Lino Edgardo Cayetano said two more facilities for senior citizens are opening soon, which will have a Therapy Pool, Conference Room, Offices, Pantry Elevator, PWD-friendly CRs, Medical Clinic Gym with equipment, Yoga/ballroom area, 2 Sauna for male & female, Multipurpose area, Cinema area, Rooftop Garden, Activity area with board games and reading materials, Massage area with massage chairs, Foot Spa, and Outdoor exercise equipment.

On Nov. 21, 2019, President Rodrigo Duterte commended Taguig City’s launch of its Center for the Elderly, saying the initiative complements the national government’s agenda of promoting inclusivity, fairness, and good governance.
