There could be at least 10 Filipino athletes who will qualify to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

But there could be more as many national sports associations are set to take part in Olympic qualifiers in the first quarter of 2020.

“Hopefully, we have 10 qualifiers. That’s our target. But, its better if its more than 10,” said Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino.

So far, only pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena and gymnast Carlos Yulo have gained spots to the Olympiad.

The Philippine men’s water polo team will be pushing for a slot in the Olympics.

Their quest starts when they take part in the Asia Water Polo Championships this February 2020 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Qualifying to the Olympics will be their next goal after a getting a silver medal finish at the 2019 SEA Games.

Their silver medal performance behind Indonesia has assured the team of a slot at the Asian Olympic Qualifying meet in Kazakhstan.

The Kazakhstan meet is now considered a qualifier, with top Asian teams gathering to compete.

The top team in the Kazakhstan meet will qualify to the Tokyo Olympics.

There are a total of 12 national teams which will earn spots to the Games.

Japan, as host, has automatically taken a spot, while Serbia emerged as the no. 1 squad in the FINA World League held in Belgrade.

On the other hand, the Philippines is also joining an Olympic qualifier in 3×3 men’s basketball this March.
