Labog tops MCC Youth tilt

Top seed Eric Labog Jr of Las Pinas City lived up to expectations as he ruled the MCC Youth Standard Open Chess Tournament recently at the Starmall Edsa Shaw in Mandaluyong City.   

 Labog, with highest NCFP rating 2200, finished with six wins and one draw to post a total of 6.5 points after seven rounds of play in this NCFP-sanctioned event organized by the Metropolitan Chess Club in cooperation with MILO.  

Labog brought home the champion trophy plus the gold medal and the P3,000 top prize.

Tied from second to fourth places with 5.5 points apiece were Andrew Sopungco, Cyrus Vladimir Francisco, Samantha Umayan and Eivanne Jacob Cruz. 

Breaking the tie, Sopungco grabbed the second-place honor and pocketed the P2,000 cash prize plus the silver medal for his feat. Francisco landed in third spot, while Umayan and Cruz placed fourth and fifth, respectively. They received their cash prizes respectively plus bronze medal.

Rounding off the Top 10 winners were: Ruther Barredo (6th); Mckertzee Gelua (7th); Emmanuel Barbosa (8th); Al-Basher Buto (9th); and AGM Srihaan Poddar (10th). Adjudged top category performers were: Lady – Umayan; 12-under– Poddar; 10-Under – Buto; 8-Under – Ronnel Jose Co. The top Milo Checkmate Performers were Kezia Ligutan (high school) and Yushua Zakiy Ismail De Leon (elementary). 

The youngest participant was 6-year-old Jaden Lawrence Yusiong from Tacloban.

 The next MCC event is a Grand Reunion Standard Open set on Dec. 28 and 29.
