Bank of the Philippine Islands, the third-largest lender in terms of assets, may surpass this year the net income of P23.08 billion in 2018, as its core businesses continue to show good numbers, its top executive said in an interview over the weekend.

“I hope so… I think we ended the first three quarters at P22 billion… Last year was a little over P23 billion. So I think there is a good chance of doing better this year,” said BPI president and chief executive Cezar Consing.

The bank posted a full-year income of P23.08 billion in 2018, up 3 percent from the P22.42 billion it booked in 2017.

Consing said some of the growth in net income in the first three quarters of 2019 are trading related but a lot of it came from core operations.

“We saw good increase in our core income and also in trading income. And the trading income also depends on the market. I’m very hopeful that the fourth quarter will continue to be quite good,” said Consing.
