Malacañang on Saturday ordered a special investigation into the attempted murder of broadcaster and Davao del Norte provincial government public information officer Pat Lucero Pacquiao in Tagum City Friday morning.

“As co-chair of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security, I have ordered a special investigation to build a solid case, and eventually attain justice for Mr. Pacquiao,” said Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Martin Andanar.

“The PCOO condemns any act that threatens the well-being of media practitioners simply for doing their job of informing the public. Our office is dedicated to creating an environment that fosters press freedom and where the media can work free of harm,” he added.

The vehicle of Pacquiao, owner of radio station 99.9 RPFM Tagum, was shot several times by a motorcycle-riding gunman while he was driving in Purok White Dove, Brgy. Visayan, Tagum City.

He sustained a gunshot wound at the right upper back of his body.

Media organizations have condemned the slay attempt on Pacquiao.

“We reiterate that harming any member of the press for any adverse commentary is a dastardly act not worth of a civilized society,” said the Mindanao Independent Press Council in a statement.

“We also appeal to the authorities to provide Mr. Pacquiao adequate security. We will continue to monitor this incident and will assist in any way we can to help prevent any such violent act against Mr. Pacquiao and any other members of the press, for that matter,” the MIPC said. With PNA
