Korea is set to conduct an onsite inspection and process a proposal to accredit new poultry processing facilities in the Philippines for the resumption of chicken exports to South Korea, the Agriculture Department said Wednesday.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar and an official delegation from the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs met on September 23, 2019 to deliberate on the plan of Korea to resume chicken meat imports from the Philippines.

It has been two months since South Korea lifted the ban on Philippine chicken exports while its appetite for Philippine chicken has increased over time.

The accreditation of facility that will process chicken for export to Korea is also expected to reopen the market to Philippine duck meat and poultry egg shipments.

The Philippines has been appreciative of the Korean government for lifting the suspension.

“We are hoping to increase the volume of export of poultry products to South Korea,” Dar said.

Korea’s chicken imports in 2018 reached 140,000 metric tons. They are expected  to increase to 145,000 metric tons in 2019 on higher demand and cheaper price.
