After a series of unfortunate results in recent ONE Championship matches, the youthful Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres has added more firepower to her game.
Torres immersed herself in luta livre, a Brazilian martial art that focuses on catch wrestling and judo.
After she suffered consecutive losses, she needed something to compliment her already dangerous striking game.
“With the high level of mixed martial arts today, I need to keep up and improve if I want to get positive results moving forward,” Torres said.
“I’m in the middle of a four-match losing streak, but that doesn’t break my confidence. In fact, it has pushed to be even better and that’s what brought me to luta livre.”
She first discovered the art at Catalan Fighting System, but this time, Torres wants to perfect the art that she thinks could be the missing piece in her skillset.
“My last loss came from a triangle choke, and most times I’ve been dominated on the ground. Luta livre will only help me because other than its offense, it will teach me how to remain calm,” Torres explained.
“I’ve been careless in my previous bouts, which I believe is the reason why victory has been elusive.”
With the help of her coach, Alfonso Cego, who is a Brazilian luta livre black belt and ONE Strawweight World Title contender, and Rene “The Challenger” Catalan, Torres is confident that the elusive victory is within reach.
“This sport requires every athlete to adjust and improve. If you stop working on it, you’d struggle. That’s why I’m taking every lesson to heart and I try to work on it each time,” Torres said.
“I have the best, supportive coaches by my side. All I need to do is work double-time and follow their instructions. I’m still confident and I feel like I’ll finally get [the win] in my next bout.”
