Czechs blank Filipinos, 0-3

The Philippines was blanked by host Czech Republic, 0-3, in the International Tennis Federation World Junior Team Tennis quarterfinals in Prostejov.

It was the only main draw tie in the girls’ division that was settled in the doubles, according to the tournament’s official website.

Brenda Fruhvirtova led the way with a 6-1, 6-1 stopping of Alexa Joy Milliam in first singles at the clay court of the TK Plus Arena.

After that, Nikola Bartunkova gave the Czech a 2-0 lead when she beat left-hander Alexandra Eala, 6-2 7-5.

In the doubles, Bartunkova teamed up with Linda Fruhvirtova for a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Eala and Milliam.

This relegated the Filipinas to a playoff for 5th to eighth places with Ukraine, according to team chaperon Michael Francis Eala in a message to the Manila Standard.

So far, the seven-time champion United States, behind no.1 Clervie Ngounoue, overcame Japan, 3-0, to secure a place in semifinals in Prostejov.

With Japan leading, 1-0, Ngounoue recovered from a set down to edge Mio Mushika, 6-7 (9), 6-4, 6-4, in the second singles.

With Tsehay Driscoll as Ngounoue’s teammate in the doubles, they came up with a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 stopping of Sayaka Ishii and Mushika.

Team USA will now play top seeds Switzerland in the semifinals, with the chance to regain the trophy which they last won in 2017.

Switzerland got past a strong Serbian side, 2-1, to also reach the semis with Canada, which won over Ukraine, 2-1.
