On his first day in office, Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto on Monday suspended a three-year-old odd-even vehicle reduction scheme in the city that has caused confusion among motorists, fulfilling a campaign promise.

Sotto also suspended the apprehension of motorists violating the odd-even scheme, which was implemented only on certain streets within Pasig, according to a copy of a city ordinance released yesterday.

“Traffic is a tough issue. I’m not promising I will solve traffic because it’s impossible for one mayor [to do alone],” the son of actors Vic Sotto and Coney Reyes told ABS-CBN News.

The young mayor, who was just two years old when the erstwhile ruling Eusebio family started its 27-year domination of Pasig politics until the last May elections, was the only councilor who opposed the traffic measure when the city council approved it three years ago.

The ordinance, enacted in September 2016, banned vehicles with license plates ending in even numbers from Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Those with odd numbers were barred on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Roads covered by the traffic measure were Elisco Road, R. Jabson St., San Guillermo Street, Sandoval Avenue, and F. Legaspi Bridge.

On Sunday, Sotto took his oath before Commission on Audit chairperson Michael Aguinaldo at the Pasig City Sports Center, filled with the 29-year-old mayor’s family, allies, and supporters.

The mayor’s Aksyon partymate, Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo, also took his oath of office.

Sotto defeated incumbent Pasig Mayor Bobby Eusebio by over 70,000 votes in the May 13 polls.
