Mayon crater glows with 2 quakes, plume

Mayon Volcano showed some activity on Friday, as state volcanologists recorded six volcanic earthquakes and two rockfall events over 24 hours.

Two of the earthquakes were related to phreatic eruption events that occurred at 8:11 a.m. on Thursday and 6:27 a.m. on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a statement.

“These phreatic events generated 500- and 300-m high grayish ash plume from the summit before drifting southwest, respectively,” PHIVOLCS said.

A “fair crater glow” could be observed on the summit of the world famous volcano at night, it added.

At present, Alert Level 2 prevails over Mayon, meaning the volcano “is at a moderate level of unrest.”

Sudden explosions, lava collapses, pyroclastic density currents and ashfall can still occur and threaten areas in the upper to middle slopes of Mayon, PHIVOLCS reminded the public.
