THE National Privacy Commission on Thursday said it was waiting for the Philippine National Police explanation over its reported profiling of left-leaning teachers that triggered allegations of government crackdown on dissent.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers had claimed police officers visited in several schools asking for the names of its members.

The NPC has reached out to police own data privacy unit over the incident and expected to meet with its representatives soon, said agency chairman Ramon Liboro.

“We must face this formally and have this issue addressed in a formal forum,” he told radio dzMM, beamed nationwide.

Liboro said police officers did not need NPC’s clearance for intelligence operations.

He said the body only needed assurance that in enforcing the law police were not violating another existing law.
