Macalintal: 70 age for retirement

IF elected, senatorial aspirant Romulo Macalintal on Tuesday said he would bat for the passage of a mandatory retirement age at 70 both in the government and private sector.

At the Quezon City’s Real News forum, Macalintal said most senior citizens are forced to retire at 60.

“The problem [with the law] is that they are compelled to retire even if they are still capable to work,” he told reporters.

While justices and judges retire when reaching 70, other government employees and officials have to give up their jobs earlier, he said.

“Look at the police and the military, they retire at 56. Why is it that there is such [age] discrimination?” he asked.

“In [the United States of] America, there is no age limitation for as long as you can still work,” he said.

“Let it be voluntary if one wants to retire. For me, 70 is okay as the retirement age,” he added.
