Vice President Leni Robredo on Friday said ousted Supreme Court chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno is a welcome addition to the senatorial lineup of the Liberal Party for next year’s elections.
“If she is interested [to run for the Senate], why not? I think she is a very good addition to the ticket,” the vice president said.
While Senator Francis Pangilinan is the opposition party’s president, Robredo is the LP’s chairperson.
“I just hope that she is that interested… especially in the [issue of] judicial reform. She started judicial reform at the Supreme Court. That is one of the much-needed reforms of our country,” Robredo said.
Earlier, the vice president said the removal of Sereno from the high court had “trampled the Constitution.”
Pangilinan has said he is open to including Sereno in the party’s senatorial lineup. The former magistrate was appointed to the Supreme Court by former President Benigno Simeon Aquino III, an LP stalwart.
Sereno told the ABS-CBN News Channel on Thursday she was “open to running for public office. It’s an option.” It was a complete turnaround from her previous statements that she had no plan to enter politics.
