Grid operator National Grid Corp. of the Philippines will start construction of the P52-billion Visayas-Mindanao Interconnection Project within the year with target completion by 2020, the company announced Thursday.
“This is the largest transmission undertaking in the country’s history. The benefits to the public will come not just when the facility is energized and begins to facilitate power exchange across the three main island groups, but will begin encouraging economic activity in remote areas as soon as construction begins this year,” the company said.
NGCP said in a statement the planned interconnection of the Mindanao and Visayas power grids would strengthen the country’s transmission network and open more opportunities for employment for host communities.
With the construction of the project to run in parts of Cebu in Visayas and in Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Lanao del Norte in Mindanao, job opportunities will become available in these areas.
