Tricycles not allowed as school transport service

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has reiterated that tricycles are not allowed to be used as school transport service.

The Board, in a letter addressed to Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Danilo Lim, stressed that vans, mini-buses, coasters, coaches and buses are the only types of motor vehicles that are allowed to transport students.

“Tricycle is not one of the above stated allowed types of vehicle for School Transport Service,” LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra III said in the letter.

“Noteworthy is that the passengers of tricycles used as School Transport Service are not covered by the mandatory comprehensive insurance being mandated by the LTFRB,” he added.

The LTFRB earlier said it is proposing to the Metro Manila Council the banning of tricycles as school transport service.

The MMC, the policymaking body of the MMDA, consists of mayors of the 17 cities and municipalities of Metro Manila and is presided by the agency’s chairperson.

LTFRB Memorandum 2015-007 states that vans with front-facing seats with individual seatbelts for passengers, mini-bus, coaster, coach and bus are the types of vehicles allowed as school transport service.

Side-facing passenger vans are needed to be phased out and replaced with vehicles that have front-facing seats.
