The Commission on Human Rights on Sunday called on the public, particularly those from the entertainment sector, to stop from promoting discrimination against less privileged people, including adopted children.

Last week, a talent of ABS-CBN’s noontime show ‘It’s Showtime’ cracked a joke about adopted kids.

The banter drew negative reactions from netizens who pointed out that it ridiculed adopted children.

“We call on ‘It’s Showtime’ to be more responsible in providing entertainment,” CHR spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said.

“Being funny at the expense of people under less favorable circumstances is inhumane and cruel. A person’s birth circumstance does not diminish his/her dignity, nor does it define his/her personhood,” she added.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development has condemned the “offensive joke” adding that ‘It’s Showtime’ stimulated) social stigma to adoptees.

The management of ‘It’s Showtime’ has already apologized for the mistake of its talent.

The program is asking for your forgiveness and it is not our intention to disrespect or ridicule others. You can count on us to be more careful, responsible, and sensitive with our words for the happiness of us all.
