A Metro Manila lawmaker on Wednesday supported the idea to allow motorcycle taxis as a mode of transportation in Metro Manila and other urban centers nationwide in a bid to decongest and solve the traffic problem.
At a congressional hearing conducted by the House committee on Metro Manila Development, former mayor and Marikina City Rep. Bayani Fernando said motorcycle remains the best alternative to the heavy traffic.
"The motorcycle is a better alternative to the taxis or tricycles as they occupy very little space in the streets," Fernando, former MMDA chairman, said.
He said there is no need for the motorcycle riders to get a franchise to operate—a policy he implemented in Marikina when he was the city's mayor.
“I stopped the issuance of franchises and created community boards where they are registered,” Fernando said.
