Manila Electric Co., the biggest electricity retailer, will apply for electric vehicle routes with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to promote EV use.

“We are looking at the possibility of getting rights to a route, awarded to us. We are looking at potential routes,” Meralco president Oscar Reyes said.

Reyes said the new routes would serve private communities and villages and local government units.

“Tricycles, if LGU wants to shift their old fleet to e-trikes. Private communities and villages and schools like Ateneo and La Salle as well as UP,” he said.

The company, however, has no plans yet to engage in EV manufacturing.

“Maybe for now, manufacturing is not in the cards for us. There are companies who are already into e-vehicles that can supply our tricycles, jeeps and buses,” Reyes said.

Meralco registered its new subsidiary, eSakay Inc., that will engage in EV and other alternative energy sources.
