MALACAÑANG on Monday denounced the killing of ex-La Union Rep. Eufranio Eriguel who was shot dead along with his two bodyguards by still unidentified armed men in La Union.

Eriguel was shot while speaking before a gathering in Capas village in Agoo, La Union, on Saturday night.

“Investigators are now gathering evidence as we vow to bring justice to the slain congressman and his bereaved family,” Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said in a statement.

He said the police and military were doing their best to maintain peace and order and to ensure the safety of the public from criminals and political opportunists who wanted to create trouble to discredit the government’s fight against all forms of criminality and violence.

Police said Eriguel was speaking before a gathering in Capas around 7 p.m. when he was shot by two men aboard a black Mitsubishi Montero and a white Toyota Innova.
