Daniel Quizon and Kylen Joy Mordido headed the other 2017 ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships, playing the pacesetter roles after the halfway mark of the National Age Group Chess Championships at Governors’ Hall, Roxas City, Capiz.
Quizon, who scooped five gold medals and a silver in the AAGCC and the silver in last month’s Asian Youth Chess Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand, was a point ahead of the opposition in U20 boys.
A five-gold and a silver medal winner in the AAGCC herself, Mordido had a half-point edge over her closest pursuer in the U20 girls.
Michael Concio, also a five-gold and silver medal winner in the AAGCC, and Jerlyn San Diego, who swept all six gilts in her category in the AAGCC and PSA awardee, nursed a half-point advantage in the U14 boys and girls, respectively.
Al-basher Buto, another PSA awardee and AAGCC five-gold and silver medalist, dictated the tempo in the U8 boys of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines-organized championships sponsored by Capiz Provincial Government under Gov. Antonio del Rosario and Philippine Sports Commission.
Ruelle Canino, another AAGCC six-gold medalist, was on top of the heap in the U10 girls.
Quizon, Mordido, Concio and San Diego belong to the pool of players maintained by Dasmariñas City Mayor Elpidio Barzaga, while Buto is from Cainta, Rizal and Canino from Cagayan de Oro.
Other leaders included: U18- Aeron Keife Sinining (boys) and Vic Glysen de Rotas; U16- Jarvey Labanda and Jarel Renz Lacambra; U12- Allan Gabriel Hilario and Queen Rose Pamplona; U10- Cyrus James Damiray; and U8- Maria Teresa Lumancas.
