The Makati City government has chosen celebrity model and actress Sofia Louise Andres as Mayflower Queen in this year’s Flores de Mayo procession to be held Friday afternoon at the city hall.

Mayor Abigail Binay will lead the coronation rites for the annual celebration set on May 4, 5 p.m. at the lobby of City Hall Building II.

Andres, a young talented actress and commercial model, is best known for her roles in “She’s Dating the Gangster,” “Relaks, It’s Just Pag-Ibig,” “Forevermore,” “Pusong Ligaw” and “Bagani.” She is currently managed by ABS-CBN Star Magic.

Romulo Salgado Jr., Officer-in-Charge of the city’s Information and Community Relations Department, said the coronation will be followed

by a parade of floats toward the St. Peter Church and St. Paul Church in Barangay Poblacion.

Salgado said “Sagalas” (princesses) representing 28 barangays, 13 city hall offices and private companies will participate in the procession. He added other participants in the event include Heidi Santos, Ms. Makati Tourism 2017 and 10 individuals from the persons with disability sector.

The sagalas and their escorts will be wearing traditional Filipino costumes as they parade on board flower-adorned floats.

Last year, actress and celebrity model Kate Valdez also crowned as the Mayflower Queen of Makati City where Mayor Binay led the coronation rites with her daughter Martina as one of the sagalas.

The Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May) Festival or Santacruzan is one of the most celebrated events in May in Makati and throughout the country. The procession of sagalas and their escorts depicts the search of St. Helena for the cross of Jesus Christ and gives honor to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

According to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, it was first introduced to the Filipinos by Spanish friars in 1854.
