BRACE for hotter days as summer is already approaching, the weather bureau said Sunday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the northeast monsoon has weakened.

Aldczar Aurelio, weather forecaster, said the bureau may declare the onset of the dry season over the week, adding that the cool northeast monsoon or “hanging amihan” may no longer be dominant  in Luzon.

“We saw in our forecast the northeast monsoon will no longer prevail, and that we will soon declare the onset of summer,” he said.

The effect of the northeast monsoon may have been prolonged this year by a “weak” La Niña condition characterized by the unusually cool ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific.
