The local government of Tanza, Cavite, led by Mayor Yuri Pacumio, recently celebrated its 104th Araw ng Tanza with numerous activities surrounding its founding anniversary from Feb. 16 to 28.

The “Lohitor” parade—a portmanteau for “lobo” (balloon), “Higante” (giant), and “toro” (bull)—underscored the street dancing competition on Feb. 28 at the town proper, and the Gabi ng Parangal-Yap Gawad Awards was the nightcap at the Sports Center.

The Yap Gawad Awards is a recognition of the exceptional talents and intelligence of professional board passers of the locality. This is a manifesto of support of the local government of Tanza to the people who brought honor and pride to the locality, said Pacumio.

Tanza is where Emilio Aguinaldo took his oath as the first President of the Revolutionary Government of the Philippines. It is also the hometown of Felipe G. Calderon, who drafted the first Philippine Constitution.

The festivities included the “Dugong Alay, Sagip Buhay” bloodletting project last Feb. 23 at the MDRRMO building in the municipal hall grounds.

The “Local, Vocal, Loud and Proud” Music Festival was held last Feb. 25, and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Caravan was staged the day after at the Sports Complex.

The local government also issued free Civil Registrar documents (local copy) last Feb. 26 and 27.

A thanksgiving Mass was held at the historic Santa Cruz Parish Church, attended by Cavite 6th District Rep. Luis ‘Jon Jon’ Ferrer IV and municipal councilors.

Tanza, formerly known as Santa Cruz de Malabon, was originally a part of San Francisco de Malabon (now General Trias City) called Estancia. It became a separate town in 1770, and then again as an independent municipality in 1910.

Its name was changed to Tanza by Commonwealth Act No. 2390 filed by then-Cavite Rep. Florentino Joya (1912-1916).
