The Supreme Court (SC) has junked the four petitions against the extension of martial law in Mindanao.

The high tribunal rendered the ruling during the en banc session today.

The justices voted 10-5 dismissing the petitions that questioned the legality and constitutionality of martial law extension granted by Congress.

Martial law in Mindanao is in effect until December 31, 2018 as a result of this act by lawmakers.

SC issued the decision in response to the petitions submitted by the members of the opposition bloc in the House of Representatives and some human rights advocates.

Martial law extension was approved by Congress in a joint session last December 13, 2017.

A total of 240 lawmakers voted in favor of the extension, while 27 lawmakers voted against the request of President Rodrigo Duterte.

The deliberations on the matter took four hours.

Duterte had said the extension was meant to totally eradicate the Islamic State-inspired terror groups in the south.
