Securities and Exchange Commission commissioner Blas James Viterbo has tendered his resignation due to medical reasons.

SEC spokesperson Armando Pan in a text message confirmed Viterbo submitted his resignation letter through Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez on Feb. 1.

“He will prioritize his medical check up because he has irregular heart beat,” Pan said.

A corporate and tax lawyer by profession with a background in management and finance coupled with practical experience in public policy and entrepreneurship, Viterbo was appointed SEC Commissioner on May 20, 2014 with a fixed term of seven years or until 2021.

Prior to joining the SEC, Viterbo was director and treasurer of a private corporation with business interests in mass media, power generation, commercial and and tourism realty development.

He served as a member of the board of directors of the Development Bank of the Philippines, where he advocated good governance initiatives.

He sat in DBP’s Trust, Audit, and Human Resource Committees, and represented the bank as a member of the governing board of the Maritime Industry Authority.

Previously an entry-level legislative-technical staff lawyer in the office of then Senator Manuel Roxas, Viterbo obtained his Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Accountancy degrees from the University of the Philippines–Diliman.
