Sports commission to review athletes/coaches’ allowance scheme

TO keep up with the times, a review of the current allowances of national coaches and athletes is in the offing.

The board of commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission will discuss on Monday if an increase should be done in order to respond to the present economic situation in the country.

“It’s incumbent for us to review in order to respond to the times,” said PSC chairman William”Butch” Ramirez during yesterday’s press conference that was held on the occasion of the government sports agency’s 28th anniversary.

A top-tier PH athlete gets as much as P40,000 a month, while a top-level coach gets as much as P41,000.

Since 2014, the PSC began  the business of reevaluating its prioritization program, which will involve 101 athletes whio have won medals in the recent 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.

Under the program, a gold medallist will receive monthly allowances of P40,000, while silver and bronze medallists will get P30,000 and P25,000, respectively.   

Last December, the PSC  created a  new policy in response to allegations that several   karate athletes they did not fully  receive their allowances during their 20-day training stint in Germany last July.

There are nearly a thousand athletes who are being supported by the PSC.

Ramirez went on to talk about the PSC’s milestones last year and its plans for 2018

Among milestones in 2017 was the relaunching of the Philippine Sports Institute and their nationwide meetings with local government units on the national grassroots program.

This year, the PSI will relaunch its SMART program on talent identification, and extend its consultative meetings on sports in seven areas in Mindanao.
