House panel looks into proposed charter amendments

The House Committee on Constitutional Amendments is holding a hearing on proposals to amend the 1987 Constitution.

Committee Chairman Roger Mercado says, members are deliberating on possible revisions to the charter.

These changes include –  

– adapting the parliamentary form of government

– the President will be the head of state

– his term of office will be for 5 years

– he can be re-elected once

– the Prime Minister will implement the laws

– there will be about 300 district representatives

– 20 percent of members will come from party-lists

– the country will have states

– the states are Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, Bangsa Moro and Metro Manila

Mercado says, these proposals will be discussed in the committee level.

Voting will be conducted among members.

The approved proposals will be sent to the plenary through a committee report.
