Officials of urban poor body sacked

President Rodrigo Duterte is dismissing several top officials of the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP).

During the news briefing in Malacañang, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque cited corruption as among the reasons for the decision.

One instance is that some PCUP officials reportedly go on junkets abroad.

Former Kabataan Party-list Representative Terry Ridon is heading the agency.

The president appointed him to the post in August 2016.

Malacañang initially announced this morning that PCUP would be abolished.

Roque had explained the functions of the commission would just be transferred to the Department of Housing, which the executive department is forming.

Over an hour later, Roque made the clarification that the PCUP would continue to exist and it is the commission's officials that are being sacked.

Duterte is set to sign a memorandum on this matter.

Former President Cory Aquino created the panel 31 years ago.
