Robredo camp stays confident in poll protest

THE camp of Vice President Leni Robredo on Tuesday remained unfazed by the claim of former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. that he would soon become vice president.

“We stand by the credibility of the election of VP Robredo. Her victory has already been confirmed by the PET’s (Presidential Electoral Tribunal) ruling that the automated election system used to count and canvass the votes was credible, and the election documents it generated were all genuine and authentic,” said Romulo Macalintal, Robredo’s lead counsel.

Marcos saying he will “soon be the vice president” was a “mere front to conceal the futility of his election protest,” Macalintal said.

He dismissed Marcos’ assertion that he would surely win in the recount of votes in Camarines Sur, Iloilo and Negros Oriental.

“Once again, his assertion has no support,” Robredo’s lawyer said.

“Marcos’ reliance on the so-called ‘undervotes’ where he believes he would make a substantial recovery only shows that he does not fully comprehend the nature of his election protest,” Macalintal said.

“For the position of Vice President, ‘undervotes’ simply means that no vote was cast. The right to vote includes the right not to vote,” he added.

Macalintal maintained Marcos was not cheated out of the 2016 vice presidential race, which Robredo won in the official canvass by over 2.1 million votes.
