QC businesses told to enforce free parking for seniors, slots for bicycle users

QUEZON City’s District 3 Councilor Allan Benedict Reyes urged on Wednesday hospitals, hotels and other business establishments to strictly enforce two measures to benefit senior citizens and bikers.

In an interview, Reyes said business operators must exempt elders from paying the initial rate of parking fees for the first three hours of parking and a flat rate of parking fee, regardless of the number of hours they parked, as mandated under Ordinance No. SP 2472 of 2015.

“The measure is a very helpful ordinance, but I have been receiving mounting complaints of non-compliance,” the councilor told the Manila Standard, lamenting that many elders have been deprived of the free parking privilege.

Also, three years after the passage of Ordinance No. SP 2369 of 2014, Reyes said most major business establishments—such as malls, banks, restaurants and supermarkets—are bicycle-friendly, and have not fully complied with the measure to provide bikers with a parking space.

“We also received complaints about the scarcity of bike parking slots and worst, the unavailability of a parking area for bicycle riders,” he said.

Reyes said it is important to support cycling as an environment-friendly mode of transportation.
