BAGUIO CITY—The Division of City Schools on Monday reported that 20 students from Marawi City have transferred to some of the elementary schools and a secondary school here as of June 15.

In his letter to Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan, Dr. Federico P. Martin, Baguio Schools Division superintendent, said 19 students from Marawi City were able to enrol in the elementary schools, while one high schooler was able to transfer into the city.

Martin disclosed that Baguio Central School and Emilio Aguinaldo Elementary School had five enrolees each from Marawi, Apolinario Mabini Elementary School had three transferees, Jose P. Rizal Elementary School and Josefa Cariño Elementary School had two transferees each, and San Vicente Elementary School and Crystal Cave Elementary School had one transferee each from the conflict-stricken area.

The lone secondary student transferee was reported to have enrolled at the Pines City National High School for the current school year, he added.

Earlier, Domogan ordered the Division of City Schools to submit a report on the number of students from Marawi that actually transferred to schools in the city, so they could be monitored and counseled by concerned personnel of government agencies and the local government.

The report from the DCS will be given to the concerned offices of the local government to validate the students’ identities in coordination with the leaders of the Muslim community “so that they will be accorded whatever assistance,” the mayor said.

Domogan had solicited the support of the Muslim community’s leaders to provide local officials and police the identities of their fellow Muslims from Marawi, who have sought refuge in Baguio.

Baguio and the concerned government agencies “are just taking the necessary precautions” to prevent the occurrence of untoward incidents that could compromise the peace and order situation in the city, he said.

The local government will be consulting other government agencies to prepare the appropriate programs for the Marawi transferees.
