Palace greets new Sokor leader

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday extended his greetings to the newly elected President of the Republic of South Korea, Moon Jae-in.

“On behalf of the Filipino nation, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte wishes to extend his warm congratulations to Mr. Moon Jae-in on his election as the new President of the Republic of Korea [ROK],” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.” We wish him all the best,” headded.

He said that the President also hopes to enhance the ties between the Philippines and South Korea during Moon’s term.

“The Philippines and the Republic of Korea have strong, comprehensive and long-standing bilateral ties. Our two countries have extensive cooperation on political, economic, cultural and people-to-people exchanges in the bilateral, regional, and multilateral spheres,” he said.

“The Philippines is committed to further enhancing the relations with the ROK under President-elect Moon,” Abella added.

Moon, of the liberal Democratic Party, was elected on Tuesday after former President Park Geun-hye was impeached and jailed over corruption allegations involving her allies.

South Korea’s president-elect is a former human rights lawyer who expressed openness to have a dialogue with North Korea during the campaign.
