NCAA does away with recruitment of foreign cagers

THERE will be no more foreign players, who can be recruited and allowed to take residency for member schools in the National Collegiate Athletic Association this year.

The league will finally implement this ruling that the NCAA policy board approved five years ago.

In 2012, the NCAA came up with this new rule, which was supposed to take effect in 2014. But league members delayed its implementation.

Its full implementation will now be felt in 93rd season of the league under new host San Sebastian College.

The season unfolds on July 8, with the basketball games at the Mall of Asia  Arena in Pasay City.

With the new scheduling and venue format, the league will hold three games each during Tuesdays and Fridays, while reserving the Thursday playdate at the basketball courts of the seven schools.

All seniors’ games will be aired live at ABS-CBN Sports and Action Channel.

Management Committee Chairman Fr. Glynn Ortega, OAR, for his part, also named Arturo “Bai” Cristobal as its commissioner during a turnover ceremony with Season 92 host San Beda recently.

It will be recalled that San Beda College began the trend of  recruiting foreign athletes in 2006.

That was when the school tapped Nigerian slotman Sam Ekwe.

With Ekwe around, the Red Lions went on to snare three straight men’s basketball titles.
