Ten Outstanding Students of Makati honored with plaques, cash

The city government of Makati on Friday named this year’s Ten Outstanding Students of Makati, awarding each a plaque of recognition, a medallion, and a check worth P15,000.

The TOSM awardees consist of five students each from public and private schools in the city.

From public schools, the awardees are Grade 10 students Louiejabe Nuniela and Joan Lyn Fadri, both from Makati Science High School; John Maven Tavas, Pitogo High School; Melbris Sacro, Bangkal High School; and Mhikaella Lhorainne Yu, San Antonio National High School.

From private schools, the five awardees are Grade 10 students Mark Edward Gonzales of Saint Paul College-Makati; Stephanie Noelle Blanco, Assumption College; Princess Jelycha Mare, Colegio de Sta. Rosa-Makati; and Grade 12 students Marcela Mercedes Rodolfo and Princess Jelycha Mare Rana, both from Colegio San Agustin-Makati.

Mayor Abigail Binay praised the awardees and reassured them of the city’s commitment to promote their overall growth and development.

“Your excellent performance in school is undoubtedly the best way to reciprocate all the support and encouragement you have received from your parents,” said Binay during the awarding ceremony at the Session Hall of Makati City Hall Building I.

Binay also thanked the awardees for valuing the efforts of their mentors, school administrators and local leaders to provide them the best education that will help secure a bright future.

“Rest assured that your city government will continue to provide the best programs and services we can afford to develop the youth of today into outstanding leaders of tomorrow,” she said.

Now on its 41st year, TOSM recognizes students from public and private high schools in Makati who have shown exceptional performance in academics, leadership, athletics and the arts.

Present during the ceremony were Vice Mayor Monique Lagdameo, Congressmen Luis Campos and Monsour Del Rosario, Councilor Marie-Alethea Casal-Uy, and DepEd-Makati superintendent Dr. Dominico Idanan.

According to city Education Department head Norma Tumambing, a total of 33 qualified students have been nominated by their respective schools for TOSM 2017. After the first level of screening, the number of nominees was cut down to 15.

The five-member First Level Screening Committee was composed of Mariluna Soria, Maria Dapalla, Catherine Rodriguez, Sheryl Soriano, and Efegenia G. Dialino, all from Education Department, the office that spearheaded TOSM 2017.

On March 10, the 15 remaining nominees were interviewed by the Board of Judges composed of Education Program Supervisors I Imelda Espinol and Myrna T. Parakikay; Senior Education Program Specialist Lamberto Cruz; and Junior Chamber International members Dino Castañeda and Lerry Andrew Javellana.

The following criteria were used to determine the awardees: Academic Excellence, 40 points; School Co-Curricular Activities, 15 points; Extra-curricular Activities, 20 points; Talent Presentation, five points; and Leadership, 20 points.
