The Energy Department wants to phase out inefficient power plants and promote critical coal-fired stations to secure the country’s long-term power requirements while mitigating the impact of climate change.
“We want to use new technologies to upgrade existing plants. Example is Malaya power plant which is up for bidding. We want whoever will be the winner to upgrade it using new technology,” Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said.
The 650-megawatt Malaya thermal power plant in Rizal is set to be privatized on March 30 and Cusi has pushed for the conversion of the plant to liquefied natural gas.
Cusi, in his opinion published in the South China Morning Post, said “refurbishing old and naturally degrading coal power plants will increase fuel efficiency.”
