One hundred and twenty seven (127) old and ailing prisoners of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) have been granted executive clemency.
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre says, President Rodrigo Duterte has signed the order approving the release of the prisoners from various detention facilities.
The Chief Executive had previously promised to release prisoners aged 80 years old and above, as well as those who have been serving jail terms for 40 years.
The Board of Pardons and Parole earlier submitted the names of the prisoners eligible for pardon.
Aguirre hopes, more elderly and sick prisoners will soon be freed.
